Tribute to Bro. Akin Johnson

Bro. Akin, news of your demise rocked me like a knockout punch. I could not comprehend. Why, how, when? I was confused.

You always had my back; your advice was always on point and you always thought the best of people. I remember over thirty years ago when I stayed with you at your flat off Edgeware Road during a holiday in London. We both went out, but I returned home before you and latched the chain on the front door. You were stuck in the stairwell for over 20 minutes before the doorbell broke through my sleepy head. You were not mad, and I remember vividly what you said after I apologised – “Dele, don’t worry at least it shows you are security conscious.”

I could go on and on, but there is no gainsaying that June and I will miss you sorely. I look around my house and I see housewarming gifts you gave us when you visited Lagos last year, not to forget numerous items I ordered through you and collected whenever I was in London.

You and aunty Jo always welcomed us and our kids with open arms into your home anytime we were in London. There are so many stories I could tell about the love both of you have. I pray that God will grant Aunty Jo, Shola, Riyike and Supo the fortitude to prevail in this trying time. I know that they shall continue to fly the flag high and will always make you proud.

Bro. Akin, you were a beacon to all the grandchildren of Alfred Adewoyin Gooding and Anastasia Aina Campos and we all miss you. I pray that you are granted eternal peace in the bosom of Jehovah. Amin.

Egbon mi, sleep well. Till we meet to part no more.
