Bolaji 29th May 2020

My dear friend and fellow 'February boy' - Jimi Johnson, alias 'Mr. J', what can I say, really? My most recent BIG memory of our interaction was at Tolu's (my son's) wedding this last February. Feels just like last week!! You kept kept harrasing me repeatedly to go and remove my heavy 'aso oke agbada', as you said I was sweating too much and it was becoming very uncomfortable, due to my movement up and down the hall once the real reception had fully got underway. After about 3 times asking me, I went to offload the regal gown and beads!! And you felt ok that I had freed myself of the sartorial burden!! As a bigger 'egbon friend' you did that with me sometimes. You are Feb 2nd, while I am Feb. 1st. That one too!! Many thoughts run in my head about our years as friends. You introduced me to high-level Yoruba party dresses in a most dramatic way!! Prior to that, I was not keen on big party dresses, especially because I rarely ever attended traditional parties!! You came from the UK to spend time with me in P.Harcourt. I invited you to the wedding of a daughter of a big Ogoni King who had invited me as a 'VIP' to the event. You dressed in full agbada and waited. When you saw me get out and ready to go in my trousers and a nice Polo shirt, you screamed!!! And said there was NO WAY I was going dressed like that!! I said I didn't have Yoruba party dresses - and you were shocked!! You opened your box and gave me a full Yoruba outfit fit for a royal event!! Before you returned to England, you introduced me to your tailor. But you did more. You paid him to fit me out with TEN (10) full Yoruba party gowns!! Today, I have lost count of my Yoruba party outfits and your tailor still makes them for me - INCLUDING THE HUGE SARTORIAL WEIGHT YOU GOT ME TO SHED here in Lagos at my son's wedding!! Mr. J, I'm still SO MUCH in denial that you've left all of us that, quite frankly, I don't know what else or more to write than this couple of dramatic anedotes of our very sweet, interesting and long friendship. We shared a couple of 'peculiarly February' traits, which we laughed about. Those laughs are now gone forever!! I can only wish you a smooth experience in your continuing eternal 'Journey of the Soul'. And may you please enjoy the warmest UNCONDITIONAL love and divine Grace of God. Amen. Bolaji Ogunseye - aka ('Erinje' - as you often called me!!).
